The smooth, secure voice of Monica Groop is on display in this sonically lovely CD from Finlandia records, with Juha Kangas conducting the excellent Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra. The Finnish mezzo-soprano makes a great impression in the opening aria, "Sta nell'Ircana," Ruggiero's Act III showpiece from Handel's Alcina, and by following up with Dido's lament she makes us anticipate some interesting musical variety. Unfortunately all the pieces, no matter what their century, dramatic situation, language or style, sound exactly alike. The virtuoso "Dopo notte" from Handel's Ariodante chugs along sturdily, but the heavier-voiced Tatiana Troyanos sang this piece more thrillingly, with wild abandon. Giulio Cesare's "Va tacito e nascosto" lacks any wit or menace, though the memorized cadenza is semi-humorous. Turning hopefully to the lavish fold-out program book, we get the Britney Spears effect, with twelve smiling photos of the singer in shiny clothes, a bit of leather and bare feet. And the ...
