William Matteuzzi, one of the participants on Opera Rara's slightly tongue-in-cheek 1998 program of Rossini rarities, Rossini -- Three Tenors, is the featured artist in a new program of rarely heard opera selections. He offers solos by Auber, Adam and Offenbach; in the duets and ensembles, he is ably assisted by tenor Bruce Ford, sopranos Elisabetta Scano and Majella Cullagh, mezzo-soprano Enkelejda Shkoda and baritone Roland Wood, all featured in previous Opera Rara releases.
The program starts promisingly with a delicious scene from Rossini's Le Comte Ory, in which the rascally count, disguised as a nun, tries to penetrate the bedchamber of the virtuous Comtesse Addle. Matteuzzi not only carries out the farcical situation skillfully, he even manages to scale down his light tenor to a soprano-like timbre. He displays his coloratura mettle in an entertaining duet with Shkoda from Il Viaggio a Reims, followed by a beautifully sustained and long-held legato in Auber's La Muette de Portici.
