The latest entry in Renee Fleming's burgeoning and impressive discography is a recital disc, loosely organized around the fertile theme of night. Fleming's partner is the accomplished, versatile pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, who also lent his considerable abilities to Cecilia Bartoli's Live in Italy disc from 1998. Fleming's larger-than-life musical personality overwhelms the more delicate of the Faure selections. The exaggerated inflections seem misplaced in this repertoire, although the long, lovely lines of "Apres un reve" do benefit from her seemingly endless supply of air and famously cushiony sound. The Debussy set is more successful; Fleming's appealingly playful breathlessness is more appropriate to Debussy's extroverted setting of "Mandoline" than to Faure's ...
