This young Italian soprano had not yet registered on my radar when I received this disc, but I don't plan on missing the chance to hear her live, if only to judge how well the engineers captured what is obviously a complex and fascinatingly-textured voice. If these excerpts are any indication, her Countess is a must-see, especially if she can bring to a live performance the poise and quiet sensuality exhibited here. "Porgi amor" is perfectly vocalized, every phrase beginning exactly where the previous one left off, and the coda is rapturously delivered in a different color and tempo altogether. How generous of conductor Charles Mackerras to allow this spaciousness, and to apply such detailed work to the gently throbbing accompaniment. And Frittoli's mature handling of "Dove sono" could only be the result of many stage appearances. The opening recitative is clearly defined and developed dramatically, with quicksilver changes of thought, and her voicing of the aria is uncommonly ...
