It's difficult to know quite what to make of Salvatore Sciarrino's one-act opera Perseo e Andromeda. Scored for four voices and computers, it certainly creates a unique soundscape. Whether that soundscape is expressive or dramatic is ultimately a matter of personal taste, and most likely impossible to determine without experiencing it in performance. The score is sparse to the point of excluding melodies and rhythms in their conventional sense, giving a post-apocalyptic twist to the myth of Andromeda, who is saved from a dragon by Perseus. Sciarrino opens with a finger-snapping sample that sounds a bit like Bernstein's West Side Story "Cool" in a performance by the rhythmically-challenged. Wind sounds emerge, and the extended plaintive cry of Andromeda, "Mare, sempre mare," all too effectively suggests the hopeless ennui of being stranded on a rock in the middle of the sea.
