Anyone with an interest in opera has heard of Alberto Vilar. By his own reckoning, he has given more than $200 million to the classical performing arts, most of it to opera. A chunk of the Metropolitan Opera House -- the Vilar Grand Tier -- bears his name. At London's Royal Opera House is the Vilar Floral Hall. There is a plaque in his honor on the wall of the lobby of the new Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden.
