HANCOCK COUNTY, Miss. _ Hancock County Fire Marshal Richard Pate said arson is the likely cause of the Monday blaze that destroyed the Hancock County home NBA star Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf.
As a steady downpour soaked the charred skeleton of the house Tuesday, Pate said the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the FBI have been notified. The ATF may become involved in the investigation later this week, he said.
Pate said investigators have no suspects or leads.
The fire, which lit up the sky early Monday, was the topic of conversation at nearby Necaise Feed Seed & Hardware on Tuesday afternoon. Residents there took exception with Abdul-Rauf's claim that the fire was racially motivated.
"He's trying to blame us poor, working white folks," said Tony Wilson.
"He didn't talk to anybody around here," Andy Peterson said. "If he had been more friendly, we would have rallied around him. We take care of each other."
Abdul-Rauf, formerly known as Chris Jackson, began construction on the house over two years ago, but never moved in.
