The saga of a Fort Worth Episcopal priest embroiled in a national battle involving the authority of a female bishop took an unexpected turn last week. An organization that he led for many years confirmed that its members include four of six people on a church committee assigned to investigate him.

One member of the Fort Worth committee also is on the board of Forward in Faith, a national organization that rallies against women priests and is raising money for the Rev. Samuel Edwards' defense. The priest led the Fort Worth-based group until a few months ago.

"That's often the kind of thing that would constitute conflict of interest," said Dr. Stephen Hutchinson of Utah, an authority on church law. "And if that's the case, then they have a responsibility to recuse ...
