DALLAS _ When he left the University of Texas after his sophomore season, David Gossett could have been one of golf's casualties, a heralded young talent lost in the dizzying process of making it on tour.

Instead, Gossett took another shortcut. He won the John Deere Classic on Sunday, becoming the first player since Tiger Woods in 1996 to win while playing on a sponsor's exemption.

At 22, and with the pressure of qualifying for the tour and getting his first win relieved in one week, Gossett embarks on the PGA Tour facing another challenge: drawing comparisons to Woods.

And such high expectations are fine with him.
