WASHINGTON _ Hector V. Barreto Jr.'s first look at how a small business operates came amid the clanging dishes and busy chatter of a Mexican restaurant that his parents owned in Independence, Mo., 30 years ago.
Just 9 years old, he waited on tables and bused dishes at the restaurant, called Mexico Lindo. The family opened two other restaurants, in Kansas City, and "realized they were living the American dream," Barreto said.
The dream has gone a bit further for Barreto himself. The U.S. Senate confirmed him last week as the 21st administrator of the Small Business Administration and its 2,800 employees, $900 million budget and $45 billion loan portfolio.
Barreto, 39, has owned businesses himself but credits his upbringing for where he has arrived today.
