The horror that went through Ian Woosnam when he found out he had too many clubs in his bag at last week's British Open could not have been close to the feeling his caddie, Miles Byrne, must have had in the pit of his stomach.
Byrne had been on Woosnam's bag only nine months, and even though Woosnam has said he won't fire him, he may not be on it much longer.
Caddies, whom some see as glorified porters, are the redheaded stepchildren of golf. They get little respect and get kicked more often than a soccer ball at the World Cup.
