Controversy Never Ceases
Alert readers find flaws, make good points
EDITOR'S NOTE: EUN's readers have a wide variety of perspectives on energy issues. In this 'month column a number of readers found some mistakes in our math. We apologize. In fact, we are still working to resolve questions relating to the payback of UMass, which we will report in the future. Other letter writers have taken the opportunity to put forward ideas about saving energy, 'commenting on government policies and programs and more.
Short Takes
Dear Editor:
The article EPA' s Energy Star Program Pays Dividend (February, p. 13) was good, with one exception. There was no mention of distribution transformers, which should logically have been included as part of the answer to your question, "On the commercial-industrial side, are there other products in addition to computers?"
There seems to a continual fixation on the end products in the energy consumption area, without focusing on the key components of the actual electrical distribution system, which includes the transformers. Not until these products get their due attention in print, will the users begin to focus on them, and begin replacing the existing inventory or purchase the more efficient products in new installations.
