The Western Conference's "Big Four" flexed their wallets and their Stanley Cup commitment on the first day of free agency, wheeling blockbuster trades and big-dollar free-agent signings that should keep the balance of power right where it is.

Colorado, Detroit, St. Louis and the Dallas Stars all made significant moves Sunday in what turned out to be an intriguing chess match between three teams that have won four of the past five Stanley Cups and another, the Blues, that fell one step short of the finals last season.

Much of the activity was completed before the unrestricted free-agent market even opened at midnight Sunday. The Detroit Red Wings, weary of playing through goalie Chris Osgood's fragile confidence, led the charge by completing a deal for Buffalo's Dominik Hasek ...
