ST. LOUIS_Unable to obtain goaltender Dominik Hasek, the St. Louis Blues instead reeled in all-star center Doug Weight from the Edmonton Oilers.
The Blues got Weight and right wing prospect Michel Riesen on Sunday for center Marty Reasoner, winger Jochen Hecht and defenseman Jan Horacek.
Weight, 30, was a restricted free agent who could have hit the open market next summer. The Blues signed him to a five-year deal worth a reported $40 million that includes a $9 million salary next season and no-trade clause.
"(Free agency) is something you play your whole career for and I wanted to make sure I wasn't making a mistake," Weight said. "I'm confident I haven't."
