The Colorado Avalanche made the biggest move of the NHL free-agent season - by slamming the door on offers for three of its star players.

The Avs beat the Sunday midnight Eastern Time deadline and locked center Joe Sakic, goalie Patrick Roy and defenseman Rob Blake into long-term, lucrative contracts to keep the core of the Stanley Cup champions together.

Sakic's deal is reportedly for $50.5 million over five years, with an option for a sixth year at $6.5 million - an average of $9.5 million. Roy got a three-year deal for $8.5 million a year and Blake a five-year contract for $9 million a year.
