CROMWELL, Conn. _ It was three weeks ago, early on a Saturday morning, and Billy Andrade had just missed the cut at the U.S. Open at steamy Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla. He was playing the last three holes of his Friday round and all he had to do was birdie one of his final three and he would have made it.

No such luck.

So what to do? Should he head for the players' lounge and cry in his beer? Should he head straight for the airport and jump on the first plane out of town? Should he just go back home to Rhode Island?

"I thought of all those things," Andrade was saying Sunday. "But I decided to stay."

He stayed and called up his teaching pro Billy Harmon who was also in town. They agreed to meet in an hour, around 9 o'clock, down at the Southern Hills practice tee.
