PEABODY, Mass. _ When the guy in the yellow striped shirt with the "Nicklaus" logo on the arm tapped in his final putt, the crowd rose to applaud.
The fans in all three sections of the grandstand around the 18th green at Salem Country Club stood. They applauded as he shook hands with Dana Quigley and Gil Morgan, his playing partners. They applauded as he began walking up the hill toward the clubhouse. They kept applauding even as he disappeared into the clubhouse.
It was the kind of reception only champions receive. The guy in the yellow shirt, Jack Nicklaus, did not win the 22nd U.S. Senior Open Sunday at Salem Country Club. But he clearly made the day ...
