PEABODY, Mass. _ With a worse start, Dana Quigley might have had a better finish.

"I hit too many good shots early," said Quigley, who birdied two of the first three holes Sunday in the final round of the U.S. Senior Open, but wound up shooting 4-over-par 74, slipping from a tie for fourth going in to a tie for 11th at the end.

At first glance, the idea that too many good shots too early was bad for Quigley makes about as much sense as some of the pin placements, which bordered on either the absurd or the perverse, depending on your point of view.

They were, at the very least, overkill, since no less an authority than Jack Nicklaus described the Salem Country Club greens as being "like the top of a Volkswagen."
