The tortoise beat the hare. The player making all the pars beat the ones creating all the excitement. Par became both the goal and the operative word for the day.
In this case, that meant Bruce Fleisher, "Mr. Par" for the day, was the survivor of a wild finish in the 22nd U.S. Senior Open yesterday at Salem Country Club.
At one point or another during the suspenseful final round, seven players, including Jack Nicklaus and Rhode Island's Dana Quigley, were at even par or better for the tournament. As late as the final nine, six players stood at even par. Fleisher won by finishing with 12 straight pars while everyone else fell back.
