TORONTO _ In March, Rolando Arrojo was exiled from the Boston Red Sox' starting rotation to the bullpen.
A starter all his life in Cuba and in three major-league seasons after defecting, Arrojo was not the least bit happy with his relief role.
But when Pedro Martinez was forced to the disabled list last week, the Boston Red Sox turned to Arrojo to fill the three-time Cy Young Award winner's spot in the rotation.
And Sunday, in his first game as Pedro's fill-in for the forseeable future, Arrojo flirted with a no-hitter in pitching the Sox past the Toronto Blue Jays, 4-0, at SkyDome.
Arrojo, pinpointing his fastball and slider to near perfection, didn't permit a hit until Alex Gonzalez reached out and looped a good slider into center field for a leadoff single in the seventh inning. It was the only hit allowed by Arrojo in his seven-inning stint.
