MIAMI _ Ray Hudson's depleted Fusion had beaten Columbus 4-3 at the Orange Bowl on Saturday night, and the effusive coach was beside himself.
``I don't want to say this is the stuff champions are made of, but there, I just said it,'' Hudson said, smiling.
The Fusion (11-1-2) continues to be the surprise story of Major League Soccer at the almost-midpoint of the season. The team is in first place in the East with 35 points, 14 ahead of second-place New York/New Jersey.
Miami risks its league-best record and 11-game unbeaten streak Wednesday at San Jose (8-2-4, 28 points), which has not lost since a 2-1 defeat to the Fusion on April 21 and has MLS' second-best record.
Diego Serna, Alex Pineda Chacon, Jim Rooney and Preki are among the league's top-10 scorers. Goalkeeper Nick Rimando ranks No. 2 in MLS with an 0.91 goals-against average. And the team has scored a league-high 35 goals.
``This team is clearly not the traditional team,'' said MLS commissioner Don Garber, who was in Miami for the Orange Bowl game.
``They play with such force and style. They're really fun to watch. Nobody expected Preki at 38 to have the kind of season he's having, but the Fusion coach and GM had thoughts about how they wanted to do things, and they have created a very exciting club.''
