LONDON _ The British and Irish governments on Sunday scheduled emergency meetings to try to salvage the Northern Ireland peace process in the wake of First Minister David Trimble's resignation, which brought the coalition government to the brink of collapse.
Trimble stepped down to protest the banned Irish Republican Army's continued refusal to disarm. He said he was no longer willing to head a coalition government that included Sinn Fein, the IRA's political wing, while the IRA maintained control of its arsenal.
The decision by Trimble, the leading Protestant politician and a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, could lead to the dissolution of the Northern Ireland Assembly and a return to direct rule by the British government unless a compromise is reached in the next six weeks.
