WELL, IT'S ABOUT TIME: PENN, ROBERTS VOTED THE BEST
What do a toothy Julia Roberts, a sullen Sean Penn and a soulful Lucinda Williams have in common? They rank as the people who represent, according to Time magazine, the "highest quality" entertainers.
In the latest issue out Monday, Roberts is rated the best movie star; Penn dubbed the best actor; and Williams deemed the best songwriter.
Taiwan-born Ang Lee, whose "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" was a surprise hit in 2000, was voted best director.
The list also includes Gucci's Tom Ford (best fashion designer), Philip Roth (best novelist) and Martin Puryeat (best artist) in the first of a five-part series that hopes to "create the definitive list of people who stand for the best in America today," the magazine said.
"It's about excellence, how we define it today, how a person achieves it, and how it changes our society," Time's deputy managing editor Steve Koepp said of the series.
So, does the list include hip-hop? What about punk?
