WASHINGTON _ Some call them toy soldiers, the pretty boys of the Army. But to Spc. Joshua Grzywa, being a member of the Old Guard is an honor.
The Old Guard includes the guards of the Tomb of the Unknowns, the Army Drill Team, the Salute Guns Platoon, and other groups that perform military ceremonies.
Grzywa (pronounced GREE-va), 21, is a member of the Salute Guns Platoon. They fire cannons, 3-inch tank guns from World War II mounted on an M5 chassis with a 75mm insert. The platoon fires salutes for military funerals, dignitary arrivals and departures, and special ceremonies such as the presidential inauguration.
Every Fourth of July, the Salute Guns Platoon carries out two missions. The first is a 50-gun salute to the nation. The second is the volleys fired during the performance of the "1812 Overture" on the National Mall.
