DEL RIO, Texas _ A cool wind sweeps upriver from Mexico, whispering through the jade wall of cane clogging the U.S. side of the Rio Grande. As the sun rises, lighting the river with fire, an egret rises gracefully from the water, a brilliant white against the dark banks.
For a moment here, a few miles downstream from Del Rio, Texas, the river is still and unexpectedly beautiful. Then, the Border Patrol airboat stirs up the waters.
Ducks scatter. Three cows dining on water plants along the Mexican side look up with alarm as the 18-foot aluminum boat slides around a bend with a roaring whine. Propelled by twin 6-foot props that resemble a giant house fan, the boat skims the river, its wake breaking in waves on the land of two nations.
"The boats have proved to be an excellent tool, both for deterrence and intelligence-gathering," said Cesar Lozano, supervisory agent at the Del Rio Border Patrol station.
