CINCINNATI _ Jon Lieber isn't trading in his plane tickets to Alabama just yet. But Lieber will be conspicuously absent if Mets manager Bobby Valentine doesn't pick him for the All-Star Game.
The Cubs right-hander won his 10th game Sunday, working 52/3 innings in a 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. He is tied for second in the National League in victories, two behind Arizona's Curt Schilling, and he's eighth with a 3.14 earned-run average. He has worked 1201/3 innings, which ranks fifth.
"He's an All-Star for me," Cubs manager Don Baylor said.
Lieber insists he isn't thinking about a trip to Seattle for the July 10 game.
"Nah, not at all," said Lieber, who lives in Mobile, Ala. "Everybody always asks about that. We'll just wait and see. Right now I have a plane ticket to go home and I'm going to keep it."
Valentine faces tough decisions with the NL pitching staff. Schilling, Randy Johnson, Matt Morris, Ben Sheets, Greg Maddux and Mike Hampton appear to be locks. Many expect him also to select Rick Reed (7-3, 3.21) and Armando Benitez (15-for-15 saves, 3.44) from his Mets staff.
That could leave only two spots for a group of candidates that includes Wade Miller (10-3, 3.75), Shawn Estes (7-2, 2.90), Chan Ho Park (8-5, 2.91), Robb Nen (24-for-28 saves, 3.58) and the Cubs' Kerry Wood (7-5, 3.60) and Lieber. Pitcher selections will be announced Wednesday.
