CHICAGO _ The first-place Minnesota Twins are coming to town, and, like his teammates, White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko knows what that means.
"We have to win three out of four, if not more," said Konerko. "I don't think a split will do us much good. They're 10 games ahead of us."
The White Sox had just lost 11-3 to Baltimore on Sunday before 34,588 fans as Cal Ripken had three hits in his final game in Comiskey Park. The Orioles won the series two games to one, meaning the Sox will have to win six of seven against the Twins and Pittsburgh Pirates to achieve the 7-3 homestand that general manager Kenny Williams had set as a goal.
"This is a critical time for us," said manager Jerry Manuel. "We have to come back with our best baseball of the year. Minnesota has been playing so good. Our guys know what is at stake this time."
Several members of the defending American League Central champion White Sox have maintained that, even though the Twins have won eight of nine from the Sox this season, the Sox are the better team. In order to back their words, Konerko said, they must remember the cliche and play "one game at a time."
