IN THE JUNGLE, Peru _ It was no made-for-TV excursion when five Americans set out on a three-day trip dubbed "Survival" in the Amazon jungle. They battled snakes, insects, intense weather and near-starvation. And lived to tell.
As the narrow boat puttered slowly through the dark waters of the Amazon River tributary, Peruvian guide Gerineldo Moises Chavez surveyed the dense jungle with knowing eyes. He saw things, sensed things his five passengers did not.
He pointed to a tree about 12 feet ahead.
"Oh, look, a poisonous red tree snake," he said in his laconic way, in a voice pitched lower than a tuba. "Do you want to eat it?"
