CONWAY, S.C. _ Plastic forks, food trays and underwear are just some things inmates at J. Reuben Long Detention Center flush down the toilets.
"We have no way of stopping it," said Detention Center Deputy Director Joey Johnson. "It's probably an everyday thing that somebody throws something down the toilet that you would not do at home."
The city of Conway and Horry County are paying the price.
Together the governments will spend $96,000 to improve the city's 19-year-old pump station in Industrial Park off U.S. 701. The station, a mile from the jail, collects the waste and moves it to a wastewater treatment center.
