Chopin's polonaises and mazurkas may be derived from native dances, but nowhere does Chopin's music sound so distinctly Polish as in his songs. It is here that he digs most deeply into the musical language of his homeland. This earthy quality is underscored on this recording by Teresa Zylis-Gara. The veteran Polish soprano is blessed with a large voice, which she admirably tries to scale down for these intimate miniatures, although she is not always entirely successful in this regard. Her profound feeling for this music is never in doubt, and she brings the character of each song to life. "Hulanka" (A Drinking Song), for instance, has plenty of tipsy joviality, but the ...
