Now that Roberto Alagna has reached the top of the heap doing what others expect of him, he shows us what is truly close to his heart. The Paris-born Sicilian tenor makes an important statement with his first French recital album, and the great variety of musical styles elicits emotions and expressive nuances that may surprise many listeners. In addition to his known merits -- the command of recitative, passionate and introspective characterization, along with the ability to draw us in -- he reveals clear, elegant tone and control of dynamics and timbre, especially on top. Furthermore, the beautiful handling of the inflections of the French language and those perfectly executed "r"s mark him clearly as a French tenor, in the tradition of Adolphe Nourrit in the nineteenth century, handed down to the more recent Edmond Clement and Georges Thill.
