1. CHRISTINE GOERKE has been named the recipient of the 2001 RICHARD TUCKER AWARD by the Richard Tucker Music Foundation. An alumna of the Metropolitan Opera's Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, Goerke was previously honored by the Foundation with a study grant (1994) and a career grant (1997). Currently in Paris for a run as Vitellia in La Clemenza di Tiro at the Palais Garnier (June 2-20), the soprano returns to the U.S. for summer engagements in Britten's The Rape of Lucretia at Glimmerglass Opera (July-August) and Schumann's Paradies und Die Peri at Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival (August 3-4). Next season holds more Mozart for her, with Don Giovannis at Pittsburgh Opera (October), Opera Pacific (January) and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (January-March), plus a return to Paris for Elettra in Idomeneo at Opera Bastille (April-May).
2. DALLAS OPERA offered a preview of its upcoming Therese Raquin at an early-spring press reception in Manhattan, featuring librettist GENE SCHEER, composer TOBIAS PICKER and director FRANCESCA ZAMBELLO.
The 2001 ARIA winners are mezzo-soprano PATRICIA RISLEY, tenor NORMAN SHANKLE and soprano JENNIFER WELCH-BABIDGE.
3. MONTBLANC, the designer/manufacturer of fine writing instruments, has launched the Montblanc Special Edition JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH, available as a fountain pen and ballpoint pen. Montblanc will donate part of the sales proceeds from this model to the Friends of the Berlin State Library, for the restoration of original J. S. Bach manuscripts.
