The amino acid L-arginine may have important cardiovascular benefits, according to two recent studies.

In the first, researchers from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation analyzed data from a previous survey to evaluate the relationship between arginine intake and blood levels of C-reactive protein (CRP). Higher levels of CRP indicate increased inflammation, now linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Subjects in the group with the highest level of arginine intake were 30 percent less likely to have high CRP levels than subjects with a median arginine intake.
