The beat goes on this year for the ports of Seattle and Tacoma. Their first-quarter TEU totals place each port into position to shatter container-volume records they set just last year.

And if they sustain those numbers for the rest of the year, the Northwest's two major U.S. ports combined could surpass a combined 4 million TEUs.

The story at the Port of Seattle so far this year is especially vibrant. Through the first three months of the year, total boxes handled at the port have surged 40 percent to 486,349 TEUs, putting the port on a pace to reach nearly 2 million TEUs by the end of the year.
