The Tampa Port Authority commissioners voted unanimously on Jan. 21 to offer Richard A. Wainio, the former head of the Port of Palm Beach, Fla. the top job as Tampa's new port director, filling a position left in doubt since George Williamson, the port's former director, resigned last March. The Tampa port has recently committed to expand container-cargo operations and has long been a major bulk and breakbulk port with a growing cruise fleet.Wainio, 54, took over as the executive director at the Port of Palm Beach, on Jan. 22, 2002, replacing Anthony Taormina, who had been port director since January 2000.Wainio was with the Panama Canal Commission for 23 years and retired as …
