GREG MADDUX IS STILL GOING STRONG. EVEN THOUGH HE TURNED 39 LAST APRIL 14. WITH 15 or more wins in each of his last 17 seasons, the future Hall of Famer needs 187.1 innings to automatically kick in the 2006 option year in his contract.
During spring workouts, Maddux was asked if he can pitch into his 40s if he desires.
"I haven't thought about it," he said. "You never know. I'm going to try to get through this year. You throw pitches now that used to get fouled off and are getting hit. That's kind of the difference. When you are a little short, you've got to pitch better. You could still do it, but at the same time you have to get away with a few mistakes. When your stuff has more life on it, that's easier to do."
