A LETTER-WRITER RECENTLY ASKED, "IF YOU WERE BUILDING A TEAM AND could pick any current shortstop to complete your lineup card, who would you choose?"

We receive many questions of a similar nature during the course of a year and we can't answer them all, but this one merits more than passing attention because shortstop has traditionally been regarded as the most important spot in the infield and, as such, remains especially vital to winning or losing games.

So, even though the answer to the question involves a host of variables, including age, range, arm strength and quickness as well as batting ability, we'll ignore the maxim that comparisons are odious ...
