JASON VARITEK SAID HE AGREED TO WEAR A "C" ON HIS UNIFORM JERSEY THIS YEAR, but the Red Sox catcher said he hoped it stands just as much for "consistent" as it does "captain."
Named just the third Sox captain since 1966, Varitek said the best way he can fulfill the commitment is to be as consistent with his preparation and dedication, both on and off the field.
"It's a very big honor, but my role isn't going to be any different," he said. "It's the same responsibilities I've always had. I've got to wear the same gear, day in and day out. I'll be no more vocal than I have been or need to be. Being named captain doesn't mean you start speaking when you're not used to speaking and doing things different."
