It was wonderful to read the article on preparing for adoption, but I have one objection to some of the language used ("How to Prepare for Adoption," The Rest of Your Life, Dec. 15, 2004, p. 18).
In the section on confronting fears, Dr. Susan Lord said some people are afraid that adopting is inferior to "having their own baby." A better choice of words would have been "choosing to give birth to a child."
I've been an adoptive parent for more than 10 years, and my three daughters are very much "my own" children. The connotation my children hear when [Dr. Lord's] phrase is used is that they are not really my children and I am not really their mother. Trust me, nothing ...
