After reading a number of inflammatory articles in support of emergency contraception, I feel compelled to write and express my views as a board certified practicing obstetrician/gynecologist ("Groups Push to Obtain OTC Status for Plan B," Feb. 1, p. 6).

I do not feel that the Food and Drug Administration is withholding a much needed medication but is protecting scared and desperate patients from a potential misuse of a medication.

The escalating problem of hyperbole and headline-grabbing sound bites deflects attention from the real issue. Educated, wealthy, mature women will always have access to emergency contraception and will most likely use it appropriately. The women we need to worry about are the young teenagers, the rape victims, and the poor patients, who ...
