RENO, NEV. -- Uterine artery Doppler ultrasound performed in the first trimester can predict pregnancies that are at risk for intrauterine growth restriction, Lorraine Dugoff, M.D., said at the annual meeting of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
In a study of 1,052 consecutive women screened at 10-14 weeks' gestation, the women whose uterine artery blood flow resistance was above the 75th percentile had 5.3 times the relative risk of delivering an infant with low birth weight, which was defined as below the 10th percentile for gestational age, according to Dr. Dugoff of the University of Colorado, Denver.
"Our data suggest that even at this early stage of pregnancy we can predict two-thirds of babies with birth weights less than the 10th percentile by using the 75th percentile of mean resistance index as a cutoff," she said.
