Singer-songwriter Keren Ann doesn't spend her nights dancing on tables at Bungalow 8. In fact, the Paris-based chanteuse prefers to do her thing in New York's smaller, more intimate spaces. It's not that surprising. Consider her standout new album, Nolita (Metro Blue/Blue Note), a contemplative mix of French and English songs with shades of Nick Drake's moody wanderings and a touch of Suzanne Vega's verve. It follows her stunning English-language debut, Not Going Anywhere, which was released last year to unanimous acclaim. (Two French albums before that made the 30-year-old a name in Europe.)
