Perched on a stool at a neighborhood bar, Mira is catching up with a friend. It is early evening on Sunday, the time of day when light yields to darkness, the hour that many people meet for drinks. Nursing a Corona, the 32-year-old fiction writer looks the picture of health and restraint: She biked for several hours earlier that afternoon. She is having only one beer (much of which remains untouched at the end of an hour). She talks animatedly with her girlfriend.
