Good grains
We loved the texture and flavor of imported Asian rices from Lotus Foods. Forbidden Rice, a medium-grain black rice, has an earthy, nutty flavor and cooks up in about 30 minutes. Kalijira rice from Bangladesh is a miniature long-grain rice with a pleasant but less pronounced flavor, offering a nice canvas for more intensely flavored ingredients; it cooks in only 10 minutes. Each 15-ounce bag costs $3.90 to $5 at Binny's on Grand and Sherwyn's Health Food Store in Chicago and Urban Harvest in Arlington Heights.
