ATLANTA _ Georgia Tech coach George O'Leary lost his best friend and offensive coordinator in one fell swoop Wednesday when Ralph Friedgen accepted the head coaching position at Maryland.

With Friedgen building a lake house not far from O'Leary's in Putnam County, the two will maintain their friendship. The big question is whether the Yellow Jackets will be able to maintain the offensive excellence they enjoyed under Friedgen.

"I think it was time. I thought it was a great opportunity for him," O'Leary said of Friedgen, who had been an assistant for more than 20 years. "He wanted a head job and he's going back to his alma mater.
