PHILADELPHIA _ Democratic Delaware Gov. Tom Carper ended the Senate career of Republican William V. Roth Jr. Tuesday, defeating Roth in his bid for a sixth term.
The 79-year-old Roth has served in the U.S. Senate since 1970.
Carper, 53, had emphasized the age difference indirectly. Carper regularly campaigned 12 and 16 hours a day, and his campaign billboards bore the slogan "A Senator for Our Future."
Carper typically argued that his position on the issues _ he is a moderate Democrat with a record of cutting taxes _ was a more accurate reflection of state attitudes.
