NASHVILLE, Tenn. _ Vice President Al Gore, exhausted but confident that the presidency was within his grasp, hustled votes to the very last hour Tuesday in a tense struggle for the presidency.
Huddled with his family and top advisers in a warren of suites at the downtown Loews hotel, Gore watched as the battleground states of Michigan, Illinois, Pennsylvania and, initially, Florida fell his way.
"Cheers went up around the room," said Gore's spokesman, Douglas Hattaway.
But there was more work to do, he said, and the vice president began doing more radio interviews in the West, urging voters to get to the polls that were still open.
Then, as more votes were counted, the networks moved Florida back to the undecided column, assuring a long, nervous night.
