Aug. 7--Counting on the book-friendly market of Coral Gables, Barnes & Noble has opened its newest superstore in South Florida on Miracle Mile, converting a former Woolworth's site into a hangout for book browsing and cappuccino sipping.

The New York chain's entry into Coral Gables -- a 24,000-square-foot store with a cafe, a software section and a schedule of community events -- is part of the company's aggressive expansion of its superstore division.

Its mall-based stores, B. Dalton Bookseller, Doubleday and Scribner's, don't show growth potential, so the company is closing many of those stores as it opens larger superstores in strategic markets.
