While money for research has been found for more high-profile illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes and more recently AIDS, funding for the treatment of our mentally ill has been seriously neglected for generations.
Certainly, there has been improvement in the care of those suffering from psychiatric diseases, but when it come to research, the entire mental health community has been treated as a stepchild. The result is that nearly every day, somebody pays the price of such neglect by being victimized.
A recent case in point is one out of Chicago involving a mother who was sentenced to life in prison without parole for hanging her 3-year-old son in 1993.…
