CHARLOTTE, N.C.--Jun. 27--The region moved a step closer to more sophisticated wireless phone technology Wednesday.

Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile broke ground on its new $5 million digital switching facility and operations center at University Research Park, clearing the way to expanded services and likely doubling its work force in the next year or so.

"From a job perspective, it's definitely a growth industry," said James W. Akerhielm, the company's Southeast region vice president. "There are more wireless jobs than candidates for them right now."

The new center, located on Research Drive off W.T. Harris Boulevard, will eventually employ about 100 people. …
